The race is 164 miles of pure torture.  Jimmy Lewis said in the media meeting last night, “If someone puts the trophy over their head this year, I failed.”

The Pro Riders will be doing 2 laps, everyone else will be doing 1 lap.

Lewis estimates a 24mph average.

The rider list has doubled in riders since last year, and there is even a Girl Rider…a 6x Trials Bike Champion.

>>> We are headed out to the race course >>> Watch the Live Coverage and we will check in later!

CONGRATULATIONS to Cody Webb who just won the King of the Motos.  Full Results will be posted after 6pm.

What a great day of racing.  We will be updating this with more stories and a video from Ultra4, but in the meantime, here are the OFFICIAL Results and a few pictures to enjoy!

MONDAY UPDATE:::

Monday, Monday.  I used to remember when Monday was only a day that the staff was out setting up and now it is a full blown sea of horsepower in the desert.

Most all of today consisted of pre-running for teams.  With the course being closed yesterday for the King of the Motos, the drivers were ready to hit the rocks.  Main camp was generally quiet except for the teams that were running into issues.

As the sun went down, the in-town activity piped up.  Not the first wedding on the Means Dry Lake bed, but the first for King of the Hammers.  Surveyboy (Shawn Bootsma) & Crash (Deanne Angeloni) renewed their vows of marriage under the start finish line as the sun was cresting in the backdrop.

As the cake and beer were being served, all of a sudden the wedding crashers were upon us and the King of the Trimmers pulled up to the starting line.  The process was intense, the action was comedy.  Congratulations to John Smith the very first winner of the King of the Trimmers.

The Mandatory pre-Qualifying Drivers Meeting was next on the event schedule.  Dave started the meeting with a compliment to the drivers, “This is the 7th year of this race and this is by far the hardest race ever.  There is so much technology on this lakebed that I thought you needed a course that really shows how much you can do.”

King of the Hammers

In an emotional moment during the Drivers Meeting, Dave made another announcement.  From this year forward, there will be a Bobby Long Sportsman Award.  Bobby Long, of Longfield’s , was Dave’s first ever sponsor and a true believer in him.  Dave invited Tina, Bobby’s wife, and family to join him on the stage for the announcement.

After the drivers meeting, it was back to work!  Hundreds more pictures have been downloaded and I feel great about the way our booth looks for the rest of the week.  We will be set up in the Main Vendor Tent with over 70 drivers t-shirt, sweatshirts & hats; Girl & Youth clothing; Jewelry and Giftables; and of course pictures and photo gifts!

King of the Hammers

All the proceeds from the drivers t-shirts goes back to them on Saturday.  You can purchase them online at:   www.RaceTeamStore.com

** More shirts will be posted today! Thank you for your patience!  Just a little going on here…  😉

TUESDAY::::

Tuesday is the first day of QUALIFYING / LCQ.    There are 60 LCQ drivers trying to get into the main race…there are only 10 spots available for them!   Watch the live coverage to see how it all goes down. The fastest qualifier of the day will stay up on stage as part of the Live Show!   Watch it Here!

_____

Recap:

What many thought would be an easy and fast Qualifying Course turned into a jumble of action.  There were multiple roll overs, the first being Jeremy Hammer from Fly-N-Hi, eliminating his LCQ chances.  Later to find out that he and Ragnar Robinson have decided to pair up and race together.  “I am proud to become his friend and teammate.  I’m excited for my race team as we get to compete on Friday,” said Hammer.  Now that is a intercom that I would like to tap into!

The plan was to have the fastest qualifier sit on the podium all day and be part of the live show, and up until JT Stephens who took the course 5th, that seemed like a good plan.  Then it all changed.  JT clocked in the fastest time of the day at 3:47:31 and would “sit” on the podium all day.  The second fastest run came late in the afternoon as the 63rd driver to take the course, Randy Slawson, ran another amazing qualifying run, but missed the  first position with only .44 seconds separating them.

Seventeen drivers didn’t make the starting line today, and have set up to have their time pushed to tomorrow, making tomorrow a day filled with action.  Dave Cole set the start time of the event an hour later to 10am, and then decided to have two cars on the the track at the same time.

Among the many ailments in the pits, trannys seem to be the topic of choice this year.  Jesse Haines broke his transmission before the rock pile on the qualifying course, Clay Gilstrap has been chasing parts all week and rumor has it even Randy Rodd, who hasn’t had transmission problems in 3 years had gone through 3 trannys this week.

Tires were also among the hot topics today with many blown tires on this qualifying course.  BFGoodrich is sitting on top with 4 out of the top 5 after todays qualifying.

In other news, on the lake bed, there were multiple people out pre-running.  Here is a sneak peak at Jason Scherer’s new wrap…and a little….whoops!

As the Sun went down the activities sparked up. Miller’s Welders Ladies Night filled the tent as the ladies got one on one lessons on how to weld.

Pit Bull Tires played host to the UTV “Dinner for the Dogs”, a first ever event by Pit Bull to bring all the UTV racers together pre-event.

Big Ugly, Race Prep Racing and DSquared Racing hosted a “Save Johnson Valley” party in their tent.  All donations for these awesome cups going to the cause!  Of course I got it autographed!

Overall the day was great!  The Race Team Store booth in the Main Vendor Tent was selling driver t-shirts like hot cakes.  It is great to see these teams take on the recognition that they deserve.   Remember that you can order all the gear online at www.RaceTeamStore.com.  Drivers will get paid on your orders on Saturday before they leave the lake bed!

Smittybilt Every Man Challenge & HCR UTV King of the Hammers

Proves to Be The Biggest Challenge for Nearly Every Man

By HammerKing Production: Twenty six men entered, but only one man left in the Stock Class of the Smittybilt Every Man Challenge (EMC) at the 2013 Griffin King of the Hammers presented by Nitto Tire.  That man was veteran racer Matt Peterson of Colorado Springs in his Jeep Grand Cherokee.   “Last year the feedback I got was that the course was too easy,” promoter Dave Cole commented before the race.  “So we fixed that for this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if no one finishes.”  Cole was not far off, as the competitors had to endure high-speed desert and half a dozen of the hardest technical rockcrawling trails in the country, including Jackhammer, Wrecking Ball, and Backdoor.  Stock Class vehicles are required to traverse this sinister course with only 35-inch tall DOT-approved tires and full sheet metal.

The Smittybilt Every Man Challenge is the brainchild of Dave Cole, who created the Stock and Stock Modified Classes in response to demands from enthusiasts who were looking to race in the famed King of the Hammers in their existing rockcrawlers without having to build a completely new race vehicle.  Last year’s Stock Class winner John Currie of Currie Enterprises fame moved up to the Stock Modified Class for 2013, allowing him to legally swap a V8 engine into his Jeep Wrangler and move up to 37-inch tall DOT-approved rubber.  Currie proved that his dominating performance last year was no fluke, putting a huge gap on the rest of the field after a bottleneck through a canyon at Race Mile 47 trapped many of the competitors.  His victory was far from easy though, and Currie nearly saw the win slip through his fingers after getting stuck in the sand within sight of the checkered flag.  Britain’s Jim Marsden was actually the first physical finisher, but Marsden’s time was invalid due to competition compound tires and a steering system that did not comply with the class rules.  Only five of the 33 car field in the Stock Modified class finished, with Currie and Marsden followed by Brandon Heyes, Mike Johnson, and Jesse Haines.

For the first time, the HCR UTV King of the Hammers was held on the same course at the same time as the Every Man Challenge.  The full size vehicles got a one-hour head start on the UTVs, but it was not long before the leaders were reeling in the Jeeps in their potent side-by-sides.  Branden Sims jumped out to an early lead, but when the eight hour time limit expired, Sims was nowhere to be found.  Instead, Mitch Guthrie picked up his fourth King of the Hammers UTV victory in the event’s five year history.  Jon Crowley of UTV Guide and Matt Enochs were the only two other competitors in the 35 UTV field to reach the finish line.

Jason Scherer Will Start on Pole Position of 2013 Griffin King of the Hammers

jason scherer king of the hammersJason Scherer will be starting first at the 2013 Griffin King of the Hammers after a very impressive time of 3:19:07 during his qualifying run on Wednesday.  “That was super fun.  The Rubicon Express Nitto car is perfect for King of the Hammers and we are ready for the race.  We know the pace and the strategy we need to win.  Now it’s time to execute our game plan!”

He was just over 5 seconds faster than Shannon Campbell who will sit beside him as the very first green flag drops.  Both drivers are in single seat IFS cars.

OffRoad Design Stephen Watson Will Start 65th at the 2013 King of the Hammers

Stephen Brandon Watson King of the HammersStephen Watson, driver of record for the  #4488 Offroad Design Ultra4 car, will start the 2013 Griffin King of the Hammers with brother Brandon as the co-driver.  Both have either driven or co-driven and have multiple King of the Hammer finishes between them.  “Our qualifying time was 4:42:53 which puts us in 65th starting position,” said Stephen Watson.  “We didn’t want to kill the car before the race on Friday.  We purposely slowed down at the rocks and ended up taking two stabs at it.  We got 70 miles of desert to get to the rocks to get everyone sorted out, so we’re not really worried about it.”

2013 Griffin King of The Hammers Presented by Nitto Tire

Randy Slawson Wins The Toughest Griffin King of the Hammers in History

February 10, 2013 (Johnson Valley, CA) – Despite chilly temperatures and high winds, over 30,000 people poured into Johnson Valley OHV area last Friday to witness Randy Slawson and his co-driver and brother Mike make history at the Griffin King of the Hammers presented by Nitto Tire.  Slawson is no stranger to King of the Hammers, but 2013 marked the first time the talented driver and fabricator has held the coveted scepter in his own hands.   The Grand Terrace, California resident has been part of KOH since the beginning, navigating Jeff Reynolds to victory at the inaugural race in 2007.  Since that time Slawson has been diligently working towards his own victory behind the wheel of the Bomber Fabrication car he built with his own hands.

Slawson had the ninth fastest qualifying time on Wednesday, battling as a Last Chance Qualifier amongst 62 competitors for one of only a dozen spots in the main race.  Slawson has employed this strategy for the past three years; choosing to focus exclusively on the Griffin King of the Hammers instead of running the entire Ultra4 series to pre-qualify for the race through another event. Strategy played a pivotal role in the race beyond qualifying.  The 182-mile course covered three laps, with the first lap through fast wide open desert and the final two laps through the notorious Hammer rockcrawling trails.

At the end of 50 miles Slawson was running in the top ten, remaining patient and letting the competition fall to attrition.   “There was not a lot of traffic,” Slawson commented at the finish line.  “It was windy so the dust wasn’t too bad. We were able to just run our own pace and everything just came together for us.”  Slawson chose to run the ten foot vertical rock wall on the Backdoor trail on his second lap to avoid traffic, while other frontrunners mistakenly waited until the last lap.

At the finish line Slawson was followed by two-time King Shannon Campbell and newcomer Chicky Barton in third place, both in single seat cars that required them to navigate through the maze of canyons in Johnson Valley in addition to driving.  Only 27 of 129 competitors were able to complete the brutal course, which was universally agreed to be the hardest in King of the Hammer’s history.  “The capabilities of Ultra4 vehicles grow by leaps and bounds each year,” promoter Dave Cole explained.  “We added longer stretches of desert and more challenging rocks this year in order to test the abilities of these vehicles and drivers.”

Fans cheered on the competitors at various spectator areas and on two Jumbotrons providing live feeds from around the course.  The live webcast was watched over 470,000 times by 270,000 unique viewers, allowing fans from across the globe root for their favorite teams.

About Griffin King of the Hammers:

Griffin King of the Hammers presented by Nitto Tire combines the multiple off-road disciplines of desert racing, rockcrawling, and short course into one unlimited class and one event. The race has evolved from twelve teams racing for bragging rights to more than 170 teams competing before tens of thousands of live spectators and hundreds of thousands of online fans.  Griffin King of the Hammers is the first event of the Ultra4 series, which takes place throughout the course of the year at locations across the country.  The event is owned and managed by Hammerking Productions in Lake Arrowhead, CA.  To learn more, log on to www.ultra4racing.com.
